A step-by-step path through SEN Support, requesting an assessment, and what happens next — with suggested questions for the assistant at each stage.

1. 1. SEN Support or an EHCP?

   Most children with SEND are supported through SEN Support in school (Assess, Plan, Do, Review). An Education, Health and Care plan (EHCP) is for those who need more than SEN Support alone. Understanding the difference helps you see whether asking for an assessment is the right next step.

2. 2. Work with the school first

   The SEND Code of Practice expects schools to identify and support pupils with SEN, involving parents and the SENCO. Gather examples of need, what has been tried, and outcomes — this evidence is useful whether you stay on SEN Support or later ask the local authority (LA) for an assessment.

3. 3. Requesting an EHC needs assessment

   Parents, schools, and others can ask the LA for an EHC needs assessment. The LA must decide whether to carry one out and respond within statutory timescales. You do not have to prove your child will definitely get an EHCP — the question is whether they may have SEN and may need an EHC plan.

4. 4. If the LA agrees to assess

   If the LA decides to assess, it gathers advice from education, health, and care. You should be involved. The LA then decides whether to issue an EHCP. If it does, you can expect a draft plan and the right to comment before the final plan.

5. 5. If the LA refuses assessment or an EHCP

   Refusals can sometimes be challenged through mediation (for some disputes) and appeals to the SEND Tribunal for certain decisions. Deadlines and routes depend on what was refused — get individual advice for your case.
